Chan Kok Hooi
b. 1974, George Town, Penang. Chan Kok Hooi lives and works in Penang. Kok Hooi received his Diploma in Fine Art majoring in oil painting from the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) on a full scholarship. Kok Hooi started practising as a full-time artist from 2003, and has since amassed a number of accolades including the Jurors’ Award at the Young Contemporaries Exhibition (2004 & 2007), as well as the Freeman Foundation Vermont Studio Center Award (USA , 2007). His solo exhibitions include I See(k) You at Galeri Petronas (Kuala Lumpur, 2010) and You Are Carnivores at Pierogi Gallery (New York, 2010). Some of his works are in the permanent collection at the National Visual Arts Gallery (Malaysia), the Singapore Art Museum, and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, amongst others. Kok Hooi is interested in tracing the subtle spiritual angles embedded within the contemporaneity of everyday life, juxtaposing contrasting objects to create incongruous combinations of humour, cynicism, cuteness, or sometimes simply grotesque renderings of the ‘familiar’.
